Portable DVD ‘Not Big Enough’ For Blu Ray

EBay Resellers of Portable DVD players be warned, the Blu Ray portable DVD that you’re betting so much of your capital on probably won’t be a hit with online shoppers.

Blu Ray might be the big winner out of the high resolution format battle and it might be slowly gaining ground with people shopping to increase the fidelity of their home theater system. But that doesn’t mean that everybody is going the Blu Ray way. In fact, in the portable DVD and car DVD markets the early entries of Blu Ray have been met with an overwhelming yawn.

The problem is not that people don’t want better resolution pictures and better sound, it’s that blu ray resolution is just too much for the average screen to cope with for the capital and physical cost. High definition video offers resolutions ranging from 1280×720 pixels or 1920×1080 pixels, which means big screen = good picture.

Portable DVD players only have a 7″ to 10″ screen which means, even though the image will be displayed at 1280×720 pixels or 1920×1080 pixels it won’t be greatly noticeable on the smaller screen. And exactly how expensive will these new Blu Ray portable DVDs be anyway?

The current cost of a Blu-Ray portable unit is around 500 USD twice the price of a portable DVD or home Blu Ray player. Blu Ray discs also cost a lot more than the standard definition DVD to buy. What makes matters worse is that high definition video requires far more power to put out than standard definition footage due to the extra frames and more detail per frame.

Lithium-Ion batteries are barely able to provide three hours of non-stop viewing so how are they going to cope with HD? But that doesn’t mean that you should just stick to the tried and true when sourcing new units. Here are some things that you are going to want to make sure that your portable DVD players have:

Extra card ports: An increasing number of consumers want the ability to take the SD cards straight from their cameras and insert them into their portable player so that they are able to share home videos and pictures on a larger screen.

Gaming Console Compatibility: Can it hook up a video game console such as an Xbox 360 or a PS3 to the player or better yet, is it NES or SNES ready?

Digital TV Readiness: With the shift from analog to digital TV, consumers are more likely to want a portable player that will receive and decode ATSC or DVB transmissions.

With the advent of these new technologies, consumers are going to be looking for more out of their portable media than just the ability to view movies on the go.

Add that together with the fact that as far as portable movie viewing goes, definition and picture quality is not as high on the list of what is valued by the consumer and at the elevated cost it certainly would seem that Blu-Ray is indeed too big for the portable DVD market.
